Exploring where we live with Google Maps
WALT: to explore where we live and learn about different types of houses and homes using maps.
This World Around Us lesson linked to our topic of houses and homes. The pupils used Google Maps to type in their home addresses and locate their houses. They viewed their homes using both bird’s?eye view and Google Street View, which caused great excitement across the class. The children enjoyed recognising their own houses, farms and surrounding areas, and many were able to identify nearby fields, roads and landmarks.
As they explored the maps, the pupils began to notice differences between homes. They talked about the different types of houses their friends live in and were able to compare farms, houses in towns and houses along the same road. Some children enjoyed virtually travelling along roads to find where classmates lived near them, helping them understand location and distance in their local area.
Through this lesson, the children developed a better understanding of their place in the world and learned that homes can be different depending on where people live. The activity encouraged discussion, curiosity and excitement while supporting learning through play and digital exploration.
