Jumpstart Commas

27th Jan 2026

LI: We are learning to use commas in a list and the word and before the last item.

A short, active jump-start activity was used to introduce commas in a list, with a specific focus on using and before the final item. Polar-themed picture cards and large punctuation cards were used to support a multi-sensory and engaging approach. We also acted out the freeze for a comma, the iceberg stretching for and ad a full stop for the snowmobile stopping.  Pupils physically constructed sentences and orally rehearsed them, pausing at commas and before and, before completing a short burst writing task. Before doing a set literacy task on commas, I put up another game, a edit the sentence game. Pupils had to correct the mistakes.

Pupils were highly engaged throughout the activity and demonstrated a growing understanding of how commas separate items in a list. Most pupils were able to apply this learning independently in their writing. Pupils requiring additional support benefited from the visual and practical nature of the activity.

Assessment for learning was ongoing through observation, questioning, oral responses, and review of written work. Immediate feedback was provided to support correction and improvement.

This activity highlighted the effectiveness of active learning and oral rehearsal in supporting early writing and punctuation skills. Similar strategies will be used when introducing other punctuation features.
