Spring Eco News!
March – Getting Ready for Spring
Eco Council members and classes made a great start to the spring term by getting outdoors in our outdoor learning sessions. We helped to weed the school flower beds and tidy up the polytunnel, making sure everything was ready for the new growing season. Inside the polytunnel, we planted seeds for early pollinators such as poached egg plants, forget?me?nots, marigolds, violas and pansies. It was exciting to begin preparing spaces that will soon help bees and other pollinators.
April – Planting and Growing
During April, Eco Council and classes were very busy planting and caring for our growing areas. In the warmer weather, we planted summer bedding plants in the flower beds to support bees and other pollinators. Our vegetables in the polytunnel are doing really well, with lettuce, spring onions, celery, leeks, strawberries, cabbage, beetroot and rhubarb all growing nicely. We loved checking on them regularly and seeing how quickly they are developing.
May – Watching the Magic Unfold
In May, we continued to enjoy watching everything grow. We planted pea and beetroot seeds in clear plastic cups so we could see the roots and shoots as the plants developed – it really felt like watching magic unfold! We also prepared outdoor areas ready for raspberry canes and are looking forward to planting them very soon.
We have been watching the tadpoles with great interest in the Pond. We love seeing how they are growing week to week!
Of course, 8th May was a very special day. During Polytunnel Club, we celebrated Sir David Attenborough’s 100th Birthday with some delicious cake and by doing what he loves best – exploring our wonderful school gardens and learning more about the natural world around us. It was the perfect way to celebrate such an inspirational figure.
Happy Birthday, Sir David!
