Stick boat experiment.
This week we looked at different kind of boats that we can see at the seaside. We talked about the different materials that are used to make boats. On Friday, we went up to the Thomas Trail and made our own stick boats. The pupils were given the task to find about 6/7 sticks of similar length, weave string in and out of the sticks to combine them together to make a flat surface and add a mast with a sail using a leaf. Finally, when they were all made, we tested our boats to see if they would float! We had a lot of problem solving involved in our tasks for example, during our testing stage, one boat flopped over onto its side and the group figured out that it was because the mast was too thick and therefore too heavy for their boat. So, they got a stick that was thinner and therefore lighter to use as their mast. Lots of problem solving and thinking skills and personal capabilities were used and developed today!
